Designed as a supersonic superiority fighter the F-104 was produced in two major versions.
- Armed with a six- barrel M-61 20 mm Vulcan cannon it served as a tactical fighter and
- equipped additionally with heat- seeking sidewinder missiles as a day-night interceptor.
Development began in 1952 and completed in 1954. The USAF procured about 300 Starfighter in one and two seat versions. More than 1,700 were built in the U.S. and abroad under the military aid program for various nations including Canada, West Germany, Italy, Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Turkey, Spain, Taiwan and Japan.
The Museum's F-104 was loaned to the city of Pueblo in June of 2003. It was towed, by the Pueblo Historical Aircraft Society restoration team about 80 miles over back roads from the U.S. Air Force Academy to the Pueblo Weisbrod Aircraft Museum.
