The F-100 was the first USAF's first operational ac capable of the speed of sound in level flight (760 mph, sea level) It made its initial flight May 29, 1953. The Production model was completed in Oct 1953.
Designed initially to destroy hostile ac in aerial combat. Later and faster version also carried out fighter/bomber roles at low levels. In addition to greater armament loads they had provision for air refueling for extended range.
It made its debut in Viet Nam being used to attack river bridges, barges, road junctions and cantonment areas being used for infiltration by the enemy.
