Type: Shipboard fighter bomber. Originally the F9F-9 was to have evolved out of earlier "Panther"/"Cougar" a/c but It achieved an entirely new design and the F-9F9 was designated as and F-11A "Tiger". It went supersonic easily and served with the US fleet as a carrier-based attack and fighter plane.
One of the most unusual features was use of spoilers instead of ailerons for bank & roll. This permitted flaps which extended the full length of the trailing edge of the wing.
Two "Tigers" were fitted with the famous J79 engine of 15000 Lbs. thrust and achieved a high speed of 1200 mph & climb of 79938 '
The Navy Blue Angels acrobatic team used "Tigers".
