The Skyray was the
first short range, fast climbing, carrier-based interceptor. When the USAF
acceptd
the Navy F4D into
its domain its inventory it already had an F4 fighter so it designated
the a/c as a model
F6A.
Extensive wind tunnel
tests led to the creation of the bat-like form with the horizontal flying
controls
attached to the
wing trailing edge classifying it as "tailless". It set a world
speed record of 753.4 mph for a carrier plane.
It was one of the most effective interceptors of its era. The museum's F6-A was used at the Emily Griffith Aircraft Training Facility and was donated to the museum by The Colorado Supply Program Agency.
