AeroTech Mustang

I used to wonder why AeroTech kits were expensive. After building the Mustang, the mystery is gone. Their kits are precisely engineering masterpieces and built for large motors and hard landings.

Although most are rated as a skill level-5, this simply means that if you don't follow the instructions it won't work properly. Every rocketeer needs to build at least one, just to see how all rockets should be.

Perhaps my only complaint is that AeroTech kits are a bit too easy to put together. Extremely clear instructions and diagrams. The fin cuts virtually fall out of the body tube with nominal pressure. The parachute and drag line is the best I've ever seen. When you purchase this kit, you won't need anything except motors. The kit comes with motor mount adapters, allowing you to use E-9 through G-80 single-use or RMS motors. Wow!

An exclusive feature is AeroTech's Ejection Baffle system. AeroTech was the pioneer in providing a system that cools the ejection charge, eliminating the need for wadding. Ejection gases go through a heat exchanger then through a defuser, which spreads out the charge within the front of the body tube. It's the system serious rocketeers try to mimic. Their system also acts as the anchor point for the shock cord.

Ever wonder what they use for the heat exchanger material? Believe it or not, it a Chore Boyİ knitted metal scouring pad ($1.57 at Walmart). I used the same concept in my TaylorMailer-1 Cluster. Worked great.

Expensive? The Mustang retails for about $60 but Hobby Lobby regularly has rockets for half-price -- $30 is quite a deal.

Specifications: I.D. 1.9" Length 32" Weight 11 oz; 18mm and 29mm motors $30.00 - $49.00

Quest Penetrator

Quest has released a new line of kits which are made for rapid assembly, easy construction, and visual excitement. The kits come packaged in a transparent box so that you can view all of the parts and decide whether you would like to buy the kit.

These kits are competitively priced, pre painted, and are constructed differently than most model rockets in the past. The plastic fin can is particularly well done and all the fins fit well. They should be test fit before gluing as the instructions say.

The Penetrator is like a Super Roc, 37 in. long, 1.4 in. dia. It has a unique recovery system whereby the rocket separates into two pieces and comes down with separate parachutes.

The only engine I recommend is a C engine with a short delay. That is because of the weight of the rocket, 4 oz. The rocket flew surprisingly well given its weight., separated, and the two parts came down with a safe recovery. My main criticism of the rocket is the special knot. You have to tie in the upper recovery system.
